Hi. I’m Banner, and this is my very first blog post. My human did the typing. I handled quality control. I’m a 12-year-old beagle-dachshund mix, a proud member of the Gray Muzzle Club, and the Chief Sniffer here at PawsWildPath. If you’ve ever been walked by a nose, we’re going to get along just fine.
The Quick Facts
- Name: Banner. Yes, after Bruce Banner.
- Age: 12, and not slowing down much.
- Build: Beagle nose, dachshund legs.
- Job title: Chief Sniffer.
- Top speed: Sniff speed.
- Favorite treat: Milk-Bones. Always Milk-Bones.
How I Got Here
One morning, my human saw a video of me playing fetch and fell in love on the spot. He met me that night and adopted me the next morning.

The name came from my human. Bruce Banner is the calm guy who turns into the Hulk. I’m the calm dog who turns into one giant nose the second something interesting crosses my path. I may be 12, but I still have plenty of energy, and I plan to spend it sniffing everything within reach.
A Walk With Me, Honestly

Here’s what a real outing looks like for us right now:
- About 2 miles is my usual hike.
- Up to 3 miles when it’s a comfortable 60–75°F.
- Under 1 mile when it’s above 85°F. Hot ground and a low-slung dog don’t mix.
- A good sniff stop about every 10 minutes. That’s not a delay. That’s the whole point.
We used to go longer. Then came a walk where, on the way back to the car, I sat down. Then I walked about 100 feet and sat down again. And again. My human took the hint and started keeping our distances shorter. Our vet hasn’t put any limits on me. The limits came from my human paying attention, which I appreciate (mostly). We wrote the whole story, plus what we’ve learned since, in Hiking With a Senior Dog: What I’ve Learned on the Trail at 12.
One Thing You Should Know About Me
I’ve never met a blanket I can’t burrow under.
Meet the Human (Briefly)

That’s Matt, on the other end of the leash. You won’t see his face here. I’m the talent. He’s in charge of the water bowl, the treat pouch, and reading the trail map.
We’re based in the Kansas City metro, but this blog is for dog people everywhere. Matt calls himself a somewhere-between-novice-and-intermediate hiker. He’s not a vet or a trainer. He’s figuring this out alongside you, and he’ll tell you when he gets something wrong.
What’s Coming Next
This blog is all about hikes, road trips, and trails at sniff speed, with senior and short-legged dogs in mind. Think gentle trails, honest distances, rest-stop routines, and plenty of time to smell things. If your dog has a gray muzzle, short legs, or a nose that runs the show, you’re in the right place.

After a good hike, I crash in whichever bed is closest to my human.
